Foreign Currency Discounts & VAT Refunds
Value added tax (17% since 1994) is included in
prices of goods and services (including hotels, tours, car rental, etc).
Tourists are usually exempt from VAT. Tourists who buy goods, with
foreign currency, exceeding $100 in value, at shops listed by the
Ministry of Tourism are entitled to a discount of at least 5% of the
purchase price at the shop and a VAT refund at the port of departure.
Important: Make sure the business gives you an official VAT receipt –
not just a regular store receipt.
General Tips:
It is prudent to wear a hat and drink frequently. The
strong sun can cause dehydration.
